Less than eight weeks until Christmas is upon us – yikes! Those weeks will fly by and I am not even close to ready. I’ve only bought one gift so far, and have no idea what my plans are for the holidays. I’m sure a lot of you can sympathize. It seems the holidays creep up on us quicker and quicker every year.

The Perfect Christmas Dress for Your Little Girl

I know they can be cheesy and cliché, but I’ll be the first to admit that I love getting Christmas cards each holiday season with my friends’ and families’ kids on them, smiling at me in a cute sweater or sweet little Christmas dresses. I am even more excited this year because for the first year I have a little girl of my own who’ll wear an adorable little Christmas dress, pose for Mommy and adorn the card I’m sending out to every friend, relative and co-worker I’ve ever met. (I’m quite the proud mother!).

Step one was finding the perfect Christmas dress that everyone would ooh and ahh over. There are some simple steps to follow that will help you care and preserve that dress to pass on to your grandchildren, great grandchildren and so on.

Step 1...Have the dress professionally cleaned as soon as possible to remove any food, drinks or body oils. The longer these things are left on the gown, the harder it is to remove them later. Be sure that any sequins or beads on the dress can survive the cleaning process.

Step2..Stuff bodices and curved areas of the dress with acid-free white tissue paper. This will prevent these areas from becoming creased over time.

Step3..Fold the dress carefully and wrap it entirely, using the same acid-free tissue paper that was used to stuff the curved areas.

Step4...Place the dress in an acid-free, archival safe cardboard box or bag. Sophia's Style offers a great preservation bag that will fit this purpose perfectly.

Step5..Keep the dress stored in a cool, dry location. Dampness and heat can ruin the dress over time.

How to Take Great Holiday Photos | Christmas Dresses

As many of you parents know children grow up so quickly. It may seem like only yesterday you were holding him or her in your arms, but from baby to toddler and toddler to child time seems to pass in a blink of an eye. They grow and change and although we have no control over this, we can hold on to these memories in pictures. These pictures will last and last and create memories for many generations to come. The holidays are a perfect time of year to take memorable photographs of your little ones in their adorable Christmas Dresses and holiday smiles!

We have all had those nightmare picture taking experiences, suddenly our little angel turns into a crying uncooperative creature. But taking pictures doesn’t have to be a complicated ordeal to achieve beautiful results. Whether you are taking the photo for a special occasion or you are snapping shots for fun, here are some good tips that will help you take great pictures of children during the holidays and all year round.

1. Location Location Location!

Find a setting that is relaxed and doesn’t have too many distractions. A fun place to take pictures might be a tree farm, pumpkin patch, or the park. Outdoors is always easier for lighting and bright color. When taking indoors try to be near a window for soft window lighting…very nice! When taking those holiday photos of your little ones wearing their Christmas Dresses in front of the tree set your camera on the night setting, or put your camera on a tripod and set the shutter speed a little slower than normal to catch the sparkle of the Christmas lights and your little ones eyes.

2. Timing is Everything

Always keep in mind the time of day. Try to shoot photographs within one hour after sunrise and inside of an hour before sunset. The natural lighting is warm and soft during these times. You might also consider looking at the light yourself to determine how it will affect your picture. Is the light flat? Where is the light coming from? Are there harsh shadows? Overcast days are said to be the best days to photograph on, the intensity of the film increases, therefore making the colors in your prints and slides look more intense. Avoid taking pictures in the middle of the day, the light at this time is much to bright and will create muted colors and uneven skin tones. Also be sue to set your camera to the appropriate setting. You can find information on your camera in the owners manual.

3. Get Close

The biggest and most common mistake people make is not getting close enough to the subject that they are trying to capture. Don't be afraid to step up and fill the entire frame with the most important information. Carefully compose the scene and wait for the perfect opportunity to take your picture. Don't rush through this, remember you are creating priceless photographs.

4. What’s your point of view?
A simple change in perspective will help you create the best photo. Try shooting from a higher angle, this will help you stay away from obstacles that may have a negative effect on your work. Remember to look at the background and edges of your frame. There’s nothing worse than a great picture of your darling in her Christmas Dress with a pole or candy cane growing out of their head! Also, if you are taking a candid or a spontaneous picture, you may be able to get a better angle by moving either to the right or left. For a more natural view of you little one try kneeling down.

5. More is better!

Most of the time you won't get the exact shot or pose on the first try. I recommend that you take several photographs, in different lighting, or other changes to make sure you get a good one. When taking pictures of multiple kids someone is bound to blink or pull out a funny face so take extras that way you have options. The more pictures you take the more practice you will have and as the saying goes. Practice makes Perfect!

6. Time to get ready

Be certain your little one is comfortable. There is nothing worse than stuffing your child into an uncomfortable piece of clothing. This will set the stage for the photo session and it may become the reason for fussing, whining and non participation. Make sure the tags are removed and the fabric is soft, that way there will be no rubbing or discomfort.
